Efacec presented SliceNet at the 25th international conference and exhibition on electricity distribution CIRED (Congres International des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution), held in Madrid on 3-6 June 2019. CIRED is a major event on Electricity Distribution that takes place every two years in different venues in Europe with a worldwide perspective and participation. CIRED 2019 had an exhibition of 120 companies and over 1500 conference participants, the highest number registered to date.
Ana Aleixo from Efacec was one of the speakers in Main Session 3: Operation, Control and Protection, where she presented the joint paper written by Efacec and Altice Labs: “Smart Grid Protection and Automation Enabled by IEC 61850 Communications over 5G Networks”.
SliceNet was also present in the CIRED poster tours, where Efacec displayed two posters: one on “Smart Grid Protection and Automation” as mentioned above, the other presented by Eduardo Rodrigues on the subject “Cross-cutting Issues in the EPES Digital Era: an Overview of Prominent Smart Grid Use Cases”.
It was visible throughout the sessions that 5G communications are becoming a hot topic in the energy sector. Although communications are not the focus of this particular conference, it was noticeable that both industry players and researchers in the field are becoming increasingly interested in 5G and increasingly aware of the opportunities that these technologies may bring for electricity distribution.
